Review: Samsung G2 320GB external hard drive

In the beginning of this year Samsung presented new line of external hard drives called G2. These devices are eco friendly, because there is no halogens in them, as well as newest Samsung products are very quiet and energy efficient. These disks are available from 250 to 640 GB. Today we are going to review 320 GB Samsung G2.

Device is made for horizontal use because it has 4 rubber legs. Whole casing is made from plastic, while uppercase have ornaments made from circles. In one of these circles we can find status led which tells is device on or off. Samsung G2 drives are available in four colors – black, white, olive green and blue.

As in the case is 2.5 inch laptop hard drive there is no need for the extra power – all that Samsung G2 need is one free USB port in your laptop, netbook, desktop or what ever. Device will work with all Windows and Mac based systems.

In hard drive is already preinstalled applications for automatic data backup generation and for making a virtual private disk. Unfortunately these applications is made only for windows.

After connecting hard drive to your computer it is ready for work in about 11 seconds. In plastic case you can find Samsung Spinpoint M7 5400RPM 2.5 inch hard drive with 8 MB cache and SATA II interface.

For tests we tried to copy 3.15 GB file and used USB 2 interface – copying into Samsung G2 took 1 minute and 58 seconds while copying from Samsung to computer took 1 minute and 40 seconds. Below you can find HD Tune and ATTO Disk Benchmark results:

Great thing is that Samsung G2 works absolutely silently and practically without vibrations. If you decide to use enclosed hard drive in your laptop, then you will have to brake plastic case, because there is no screws.
